Malcolm Terence author of
Fifty years ago the San Francisco Diggers began the Black Bear Ranch commune in the most remote and mountainous part of Northern California. It continues today.
Malcolm Terence, the author of the newly released book Beginner’s Luck, is one of the founding parents of the commune. He’s written about those years and the effect that the cultural intrusion had on the lives of the people who already lived nearby.
One of the communes that still exists is Black Bear Ranch in the mountains of north-most California and a few of its veterans filtered down over the years into the small river towns near them, where they learned to live far from their urban roots. Black Bear was in the most remote corner of California and there was much for young city hippies to learn.
Terence offers a window into these five decades of an alternative rural life in the Klamath Mountains.
