This novel takes place in western Virginia during Prohibition. The rich and powerful Kincaid family, under the patriarchy of Duke Kincaid, control the region. Amidst all the painful family relations, young Sallie Kincaid comes of age. Sallie is a strong, capable and determined young woman, who sees life as a series of challenges and contradictions which she struggles to navigate around, even as she must confront all the secrets and family scandals that are slowly revealed to her. She ultimately becomes a “rumrunner”, illegally transporting bootleg whiskey in order to help her neighbors and keep her family business afloat. The reader will fall in love with courageous and spirited Sallie Kincaid in this exciting and engaging story. – Anita
