SUMMARY:Ashland author Bruce McConnell explores Crows Calling: An Inspiring Journey into our Better Natures
DESCRIPTION:Monday September 15th 7:00 to 8:00 pm \nSpecial Pre-Release Event for Crow-Admirers (and Anyone who Loves the Earth)! \nAshland author Bruce McConnell explores Crows Calling: An Inspiring Journey into our Better Natures\, his uplifting novel about our relationships with the natural world and each other in the face of climate change. \n“A parable of wisdom and kindness told through the eyes of the living world.” —Paul Hawken \nEarth’s animals are fed up with humanity’s mindless damage to our common home. Will a young girl and her family heed their call? \nTen-year-old Luz sets out on an overnight camping trip\, accompanied by her spiritual mentor. Peering through a canopy of California redwoods\, Luz witnesses a council of animals confronting the menace of climate change. Led by a lustrous—and talkative—crow named Koro\, the animals weigh their options. Some\, like Koro\, want to collaborate with humans. Others doubt humanity’s good intentions. The conversation compels young Luz\, innately in tune with the natural world\, to fight passionately in its defense. \nAt once a work of fact-based activism and a moving coming-of-age\, Crows Calling immerses the reader in a richly drawn family and community who\, despite their differences\, decide to dedicate their lives to the care of Grandmother Earth. They are not alone. Rather\, they are accompanied by a colorful cast of savvy planimals—trees\, coyotes\, chickens\, and even lichens—with long memories and ancient ways of healing. \nSome damage cannot be undone. Natural disasters\, public apathy\, and greed threaten everything that Luz and her friends are working for. Can the cross-species alliance find unity and resolve the climate crisis? \nBruce McConnell is an agile shapeshifter\, having flourished as a poet\, roofer\, artist-blacksmith\, engineer\, tenor\, consultant\, national security official\, non-profit executive\, and peacemaker. He sings in the Rogue Valley Peace Choir.

SUMMARY:Nathan Harris will be Signing his new novel : Amity
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday September 2nd   7:00 to 8:00 pm \nFrom the New York Times bestselling author of The Sweetness of Water comes a gripping story about a brother and sister\, emancipated from slavery but still searching for true freedom\, and their odyssey across the deserts of Mexico to escape a former master still intent on their bondage. \nNew Orleans\, 1866. The Civil War might be over\, but formerly enslaved Coleman and June have yet to find the freedom they’ve been promised. Two years ago\, the siblings were separated when their old master\, Mr. Harper\, took June away to Mexico\, where he hoped to escape the new reality of the postbellum South. Coleman stayed behind in Louisiana to serve the Harper family\, clinging to the hope that one day June would return. \nWhen an unexpected letter from Mr. Harper arrives\, summoning Coleman to Mexico\, Coleman thinks that finally his prayers have been answered. What Coleman cannot know is the tangled truth of June’s tribulations under Mr. Harper out on the frontier. And when disaster strikes Coleman’s journey\, he is forced on the run with Mr. Harper’s daughter\, Florence. Together\, they venture into the Mexican desert to find June\, all the while evading two crooked brothers who’ll stop at nothing to capture Coleman and Florence and collect the money they’re owed. As Coleman and June separately navigate a perilous\, parched landscape\, the siblings learn quickly that freedom isn’t always given–sometimes\, it must be taken by force. \nAs in his New York Times bestselling debut The Sweetness of Water\, Nathan Harris delves into the critical years of the Civil War’s aftermath to deliver an intimate and epic tale of what freedom means in a society still determined to return its Black citizens to bondage. Populated with unforgettable characters\, Amity is a vital addition to the literature of emancipation.

SUMMARY:The Fire of Love: a memoir with author Eli Jaxon-Bear
DESCRIPTION:Monday August 18th  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nIn this intimate memoir\, spiritual teacher Eli Jaxon-Bear traces his journey from the toxic winds of Ground Zero to a cancer diagnosis that would transform his understanding of surrender and freedom. Through an affair that shattered his marriage\, the painful path to reconciliation\, and the crucible of illness\, he discovers that our deepest wounds contain our greatest wisdom. \nWhen a seemingly perfect thirty-year relationship unraveled\, Jaxon-Bear was forced to confront the subconscious layers beneath surface harmony. “We tell ourselves comments and stories about the other that we would never speak aloud\,” he writes\, revealing how relationships operate at multiple levels simultaneously. This hard-won insight arrived just before doctors told him a “ten-alarm fire” raged in his bones-a physical manifestation of emotional truth demanding to be faced. \nWith unflinching honesty\, Jaxon-Bear reveals how both relational crisis and cancer became two of his greatest teachers. His three-year death sentence transformed into an eighteen-year testament to the resilience of love and the mysterious ways of grace. His journey reminds us that transformation rarely arrives as we imagine it should-sometimes it comes as a toxic wind\, but always as an invitation to discover what in us is truly indestructible\, and how hearts blown open can find their way back to each other\, stronger at the broken places.

SUMMARY:The Little Prince: Navigating By Heart Under The Stars
DESCRIPTION:Thursday July 24th\, 6:00 to 8:00 pm\n\n\n\nSo well known it’s often overlooked\, The Little Prince is anything but simple. Beneath its childlike surface lives a layered\, luminous work – part fable\, part spiritual cartography\, part wartime reckoning. Its author\, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry\, aviator\, exile\, and poet of the invisible\, remains a figure uncannily at home in every era – including ours. In an age of noise\, speed\, and crisis\, how do we stay faithful to what matters: beauty\, truth\, and the sacred?\n\n This is not a lecture. It’s a conversation. We’ll revisit some of the book’s most enduring moments – the rose\, the fox\, the king – and ask what they reveal about the world we live in now. What does it mean to tend to something fragile? To meet power when it is hollow? To choose care over cleverness?\n\nGrégory Brun\, vintner\, engineer and director of the Monterey Friends of CG Jung is the founder of Ashland Symposia. He grew up in Toulouse\, France\, cradle of l’Aéropostale\, where Saint-Exupéry first flew mail across oceans. He’ll guide an evening of readings and reflections\, inviting us to see The Little Prince anew – as a story still speaking to how we find our way.

SUMMARY:Paul Condon will be discussing his book "How Compassion Works: A Step-By-Step Guide to Cultivating Well-Being\, Love\, and Wisdom" with Cody Christopherson
DESCRIPTION:Monday July 21st  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nPaul’s conversation partner will be Cody Christopherson. \nUncover your innate capacity for love\, presence\, and wisdom with compassion training adapted from Tibetan Buddhism and contemporary psychology. \nEverything we care about–our mental and physical well-being\, our relationships\, our spiritual life\, our ability to be useful to others–depends on our ability to access love and compassion within ourselves first. This clear\, step-by-step guide offers a way to cultivate this power through an evidence-based meditation method called Sustainable Compassion Training (SCT). \nWith practices drawn from Tibetan traditions\, attachment theory\, and cognitive science\, How Compassion Works uses a progressive series of meditations to gradually build our capacity for mindfulness and presence–and to help us avoid empathic distress\, compassion fatigue\, or burnout. Organized into three categories–receptive mode\, deepening mode\, and inclusive mode–these practices help us cultivate unconditional care and discernment from within. \nWith a flexible framework that allows practitioners to integrate their own religious or spiritual beliefs\, this book offers practices suitable for people of all faiths and those seeking a purely secular path. \nPAUL CONDON\, PhD\, is an associate professor of psychology at Southern Oregon University and a research fellow at the Mind & Life Institute. His work has appeared in leading psychology journals and Buddhist magazines\, as well as The New York Times and other major publications. Paul is codeveloper of the Sustainable Compassion Training model\, and he teaches Tibetan Buddhist meditation for multi-faith and secular practitioners. \nDr. Cody Christopherson is a clinical psychologist and Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Southern Oregon University\, where he has trained Masters-level therapists since 2012. His research has included improving the trustworthiness of psychology through open‑science collaborations as published in Science and featured in the Smithsonian Magazine. He will be presenting research on psychology in comics at San Diego Comic-Con Summer 2025. He maintains a private practice in Ashland\, Oregon. \n

SUMMARY:Nicholas Belardes talks about his new horror novel Ten Sleep
DESCRIPTION:Thursday June 26th  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nJordan Peele’s Nope meets True Grit in Nicholas Belardes’s Ten Sleep\, a supernatural modern-day western about a trio of young people on a 10-day cattle drive that leads them through a canyon haunted by ancient mysteries and savage beasts who existed long before humankind. \nA young Mexican American woman detects uncanny creatures stalking her on a cattle drive toward a canyon soaked in blood in an unforgettable novel\, brilliantly infusing the modern Western with spine-chilling horror . . . \nWhen Greta Molina’s old friend Tiller offered her the job\, a ten-day cattle drive across the Wyoming prairie from the ranching town of Ten Sleep\, it sounded like a well-paid break. Three hundred and twenty cows and calves\, two guys her age she’s known since college\, and a few long days on an ATV will give her time to sort out the mess in her head. The canyon along the trail has a history\, sure\, but nature has a tendency toward violence. Greta can accept that\, even if it makes her insides squirm. \nWhat Greta doesn’t know is the legacy of murder and rot that runs deep into the rocks of this land. As each night passes on the prairie\, the trio faces mounting supernatural dangers: a ghost train of the damned\, wild animals walking alongside dead ones–and evidence of a gigantic creature in the skies\, one that’s supposedly been extinct for eons. And Tiller may be hiding even darker secrets the further they go. Safety is only ten sleeps away\, but Greta soon realizes that may be too long for all of them to survive. \nNicholas Belardes’s Ten Sleep is a fresh portrayal of the American West for fans of Catriona Ward\, Victor LaValle and Jordan Peele’s Nope\, by a rising star in horror.

SUMMARY:Fixation to Freedom with author Eli Jaxon-Bear
DESCRIPTION:Monday May 19th  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nWhat if everything you believed about who you are was based on a case of mistaken identity? \nWhat if your search for happiness has been keeping you from discovering true freedom? \nIn this transformative work\, spiritual teacher Eli Jaxon-Bear cuts through centuries of confusion to reveal a profound truth: the source of human suffering isn’t in our circumstances\, but in our fixation with a false sense of self. With penetrating clarity\, he illuminates the path to recognizing our true nature—a recognition that dissolves the elaborate structures of ego and opens the door to lasting peace. \nDrawing from decades of direct experience and work with seekers worldwide\, Jaxon-Bear guides readers beyond the familiar territory of self-improvement into the revolutionary realm of self-realization. This isn’t about adding more strategies to your spiritual tool kit— it’s about seeing through the very mechanism that creates the illusion of separation and struggle. \nWhether you’re new to the spiritual journey or have spent years in meditation and self-inquiry\, Fixation to Freedom offers a direct pointing to what is already free\, whole\, and eternally at peace within you. This book isn’t just about understanding freedom—it’s an invitation to be freedom itself.

SUMMARY:Into The White: A Love Story: a Reading and Discussion by author Two Steps
DESCRIPTION:Monday May 12th  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nThe big silver bird was mortally stricken\, both engines were out and one was on fire. Even the right windshield had been breached. The large cranes had flown with multiple impacts all over the jet. Inside\, the pilot was struggling for control in the buffeting winds\, cold and feathers. The copilot was fighting the surging of cold air\, trying to plug the hole in the windshield with his winter coat. The manager of the six Asian girls was yelling instructions in Chinese to them. They had to protect their heads and necks with inflated life preservers and their pillows and blankets\, for a crash landing was soon to take place. They might have maybe three minutes before impact. The pilot scanned the terrain. Mountains were everywhere\, save the half bowl. But one set of eyes up on the mountain saw it all\, and he prayed out loud for God to help them….and him!

SUMMARY:"The Fifth of November" A Dystopian Future History Sci-Fi Thriller with author Glenn Hill
DESCRIPTION:Monday April 21st  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nIn the sprawling\, neon-lit dystopia of San Neo City\, the iron grip of Ion Murk’s United American Empire is unyielding. His greatest weapon\, The Everlasting Pulse\, controls everything—behavior\, thought\, and even memory. Resistance is futile\, and freedom is a forgotten dream for most. \nBut for Violet and León\, two young adults from very different backgrounds\, surrender is not an option. Violet is a brilliant hacker haunted by the loss of her scientist parents\, who vanished into the jaws of Ion Murk’s death machine. And León\, an experienced street fighter\, a former child of the elite sector of San Neo City who fell all the way to the poorest streets when his parents were dragged away one night. \nThis is the story of rebellion\, sacrifice\, and a fight against impossible odds. \nAs Murk’s empire grows\, his sinister ambitions reach beyond Earth\, ensnaring untold numbers in forced labor camps in the mines on Mars and transforming humanity itself into tools for his lust for eternal power and eternal life. Yet\, in the darkened alleys of Sector Seven and the abandoned tunnels of San Neo City\, a spark of defiance ignites. The rebels\, a ragtag collective of hackers\, fighters\, and dreamers\, refuse to bow to the tyrant’s rule. \nThe Fifth of November is a gripping tale of liberation and unity\, where diverse voices rise to overthrow an empire built on fear. It is a tribute to the indomitable human spirit\, weaving action\, emotion\, and resilience into a narrative that will stay with you long after the final page.
