DESCRIPTION:Monday May 5th\, 7:00 to 8:00 pm \nThere are few milestone passages in our lives – births\, graduations\, marriage\, professional accomplishments. We anticipate and make conscientious plans to honor such passages – but tend to ignore the one we ALL experience – The Final Quest. \nPreparing for the Final Quest – Essential plans\, tools and tasks to develop before life’s end will inform the reader: \n\nHow not engaging in planning for our end can create crisis for our loved ones\nThe business of life and anticipating needs of your survivors\nThe language and assessments used by providers to discuss changing abilities\nHow and why to plan ahead for accidents and incidents common to aging\nAdvocating for your loved ones across the lifespan\nWhat changes are natural and expected on the aging journey\nResources for End of life\, hospice and aftercare\n\n\nThe author weaves a narrative story as a case study for each topic. The main character\, Rowan\, is assigned the quest to make Death an ally once again. Rowan’s journey with mentor Wim is written to both entertain and instruct us on the aging journey. Chapters begin with a segment of Rowan’s Quest\, followed by contemporary discussion of the business of life and the common changes experienced along the aging and end-of-life journey. Each chapter closes with a task list to help you develop tools\, find resources and embrace your new knowledge to prepare for your own Final Quest.

SUMMARY:"The Fifth of November" A Dystopian Future History Sci-Fi Thriller with author Glenn Hill
DESCRIPTION:Monday April 21st  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nIn the sprawling\, neon-lit dystopia of San Neo City\, the iron grip of Ion Murk’s United American Empire is unyielding. His greatest weapon\, The Everlasting Pulse\, controls everything—behavior\, thought\, and even memory. Resistance is futile\, and freedom is a forgotten dream for most. \nBut for Violet and León\, two young adults from very different backgrounds\, surrender is not an option. Violet is a brilliant hacker haunted by the loss of her scientist parents\, who vanished into the jaws of Ion Murk’s death machine. And León\, an experienced street fighter\, a former child of the elite sector of San Neo City who fell all the way to the poorest streets when his parents were dragged away one night. \nThis is the story of rebellion\, sacrifice\, and a fight against impossible odds. \nAs Murk’s empire grows\, his sinister ambitions reach beyond Earth\, ensnaring untold numbers in forced labor camps in the mines on Mars and transforming humanity itself into tools for his lust for eternal power and eternal life. Yet\, in the darkened alleys of Sector Seven and the abandoned tunnels of San Neo City\, a spark of defiance ignites. The rebels\, a ragtag collective of hackers\, fighters\, and dreamers\, refuse to bow to the tyrant’s rule. \nThe Fifth of November is a gripping tale of liberation and unity\, where diverse voices rise to overthrow an empire built on fear. It is a tribute to the indomitable human spirit\, weaving action\, emotion\, and resilience into a narrative that will stay with you long after the final page.

SUMMARY:Joshua Savage talks about his book - Secret Bend\, Oregon: A Guide to the Weird\, Wonderful and Obscure
DESCRIPTION:Monday March 31st\,  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nOregon\, the final frontier. Early in our nation’s history\, the land west of the Mississippi River was unmapped and unexplored. Only the local indigenous peoples were familiar with the mysterious Pacific Northwest. The states we know as Oregon\, Washington\, Idaho\, and parts of Wyoming and Montana were part of the vast Oregon Territory. The history of the current Central Oregon region is filled with popular tales of Native Americans\, fur trappers\, sheepherders\, cattlemen\, homesteaders\, railroads\, lumber mills\, and most recently\, recreation. The lesser known but equally intriguing stories talk of ghost towns\, mining\, moonshine\, cults\, and everything in between. Secret Bend\, Oregon: A Guide to the Weird\, Wonderful\, and Obscure weaves together these tales from the past with stories from the present. It delves deeper into history and local peculiarities to uncover why the region is so fascinating. From natural beauty to the origins of our towns\, from pristine lakes to colorful alley art\, and from fantasy Hobbit houses to astronaut training\, the unique narrative of Central Oregon is enthusiastically shared in this book. Both educational and entertaining\, locals and visitors who read Secret Bend\, Oregon will walk away with a greater understanding and deeper appreciation for the area. They will also have many new places to explore!

SUMMARY:Ecosystems as Models for Restoring Our Economies (To a Sustainable State) a discussion with Author John Giordanengo
DESCRIPTION:Monday March 3rd  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nMost of us have spent our lives trying to “save the environment” through individual actions—recycling\, shopping local\, supporting green companies. Or we are mired in seemingly endless social challenges like homelessness\, the growing wealth gap\, food insecurity\, and so many others. Meaningful change has been painfully slow. \nIn Ecosystems as Models for Restoring Our Economies (To a Sustainable State)\, John H. Giordanengo offers a fresh and engaging perspective on our most pressing social and environmental concerns\, and takes the most logical next step. With human stories and intriguing research\, he shows how we can learn from resilient\, adaptable\, and productive ecological systems to transform our economies to a sustainable state. \nDrawing on decades of experience in ecological restoration and business\, Giordanengo outlines the mysterious structure of a sustainable economy\, and the means by which all of us—politicians\, business leaders\, consumers—can take novel actions for real impact. From a focus on strengthening regional economies to regenerative agriculture to renewable energy\, he highlights practical strategies for those who care deeply about environmental and social issues\, while sustaining our economic needs.

SUMMARY:The Bliss of Your Attention: Stories - a Reading and Discussion by Author David Borofka
DESCRIPTION:Monday February 24th  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nA powerful story collection that celebrates those who strive and fail and strive again. \nIf Joseph Campbell’s dictum–“follow your bliss”–has become inspiration and goad\, accusation and cliché\, then the characters in David Borofka’s The Bliss of Your Attention are all the more puzzled by what their futures portend. Their bliss is never clear nor independent of others\, for the characters in these stories are ever in search of connection\, understanding\, and validation\, even if the latter–unlike reality and cynicism–is in short supply. \nAs the narrator of “Live with It” tells her would-be novelist husband\, “Learn to live with your disappointments.” “I mean\,” she thinks\, “I could give him the party line\, you know\, follow your bliss\, etc.\, etc.\, but that’s where the disappointments come from\, don’t they? I mean that’s where bliss leads if you’re no good at the thing that you think makes you happy.” Borofka\, whose collection A Longing for Impossible Things was selected by the American Book Fest as the 2021 winner of the American Fiction Award for the Short Story\, masterfully charts the spectrum of human emotion and the difficulty of connection in these pages. \nHapless and bumbling though they may be\, the characters in The Bliss of Your Attention continue to move forward despite all evidence to the contrary. As novelist Peter Manseau noted\, “The comedy of seeking is rarely so sympathetically portrayed as in Borofka’s hands; he captures perfectly the poignancy of dopey mortals dreaming and scheming to reach the divine.” \nDavid Borofka taught at Reedley College for more than thirty-five years before retiring in 2019. He now teaches in the Writers’ Program at UCLA Extension. The author of Hints of His Mortality\, A Longing for Impossible Things\, and The Island\, his work has appeared in Southern Review\, Massachusetts Review\, Shenandoah\, Image\, Glimmer Train\, and elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Words 2 Words\, The Autobiography of Juanita Jackson\, Portrait of a Sex Addict: a Discussion by the Author - Carmen
DESCRIPTION:Monday February 17th  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nWORDS 2 WORDS is gloriously inventive.   Carmen has an original and rowdy roughneck style. \nWILD AND SEXY\, this romance is an audacious and hilarious view of a search for love in Los Angeles and New York in the 1990’s with a sensual and mesmerizing group of men:  Bruno\, the beautiful French vampire\, Angelo\, the handsome Italian architect\, Firs\, the Dutch model\, Edmond\, the Spaniard with an alter-ego\, a green dragon named Bobo\, and Sam Tomahawk Running Light\, the gorgeous and essentially L.A. con artist. \nPRECISE AND FUNNY\, these sketches of handsome international playboys are provided by Juanita ‘Jack’ Jackson\, born of a Norse god and an Aztec princess.  This is truly her autobiography\, the sexual confessions of a poet and a wordmonger.

SUMMARY:Neil Holland talks about his new book "Magnetic Moments" the fascinating story of the development of MRI technology
DESCRIPTION:Monday November 11th  7:00 to 8:00 pm \n“Magnetic Moments” is the inside story of the birth and growth of the medical technology that changed the world of diagnostic imaging\, authored by one of the first members of one  of the pioneering research teams that brought the technology we know today as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) from pure research into clinical use. Part autobiography\, the book covers the author’s journey from being born in bombed-out Liverpool\, England in the aftermath of World War II; how he utilized his curiosity and interest in all things electronic to leave pharmaceutical research and become one of the key contributors to the development and commercialization of MRI\, ultimately moving to the United States. Holland charts the fifty-year pathway of development; from the crude experiments on samples a few millimeters in size to the creation of huge high-powered machines that probe the inner workings of the human body\, combining technologies and science from diverse branches of physics\, chemistry and engineering. \n“Magnetic Moments” tells not only the story of its author and his contribution to the development of MRI\, but also the intrigue and inside story of the competition\, jealousy\, and sometimes collaboration between competing research teams in the UK and the US – the academic infighting\, the sometimes hilarious misadventures and missteps\, the clash of egos. And as the technology emerges from academia into commercial development\, Holland provides the reader with a fascinating potpourri of first-hand stories from around the globe of corporate greed\, management ineptitude\, medical malpractice and ultimately triumph as the modality finally emerges as a powerful clinical tool.  And how the Brits lost it all\, from being the first to launch MRI to no longer being a significant presence in the diagnostic imaging business.  Holland’s stories are a vivid recollection illuminated by over 170 pictures\, mostly from his personal archive\, many never before published. As an accomplished musician\, he intertwines the history of MRI development with music references which astound and delight the reader. \n Neil Holland is an experienced published author of over fifty peer-reviewed scientific papers\, book chapters\, and journal articles. In his first full-length book\, his gift for storytelling comes to light. After leaving university research in the early 1980s\, he moved to the US shortly after beginning his professional career. Now retired\, he lives in Ashland\, Oregon where he writes and performs music and spends as much time hiking\, running\, biking\, camping\, and kayaking outdoors as he can. \n

SUMMARY:Stephen Most talks about his book "River of Renewal: Myth and History in the Klamath Basin"
DESCRIPTION:Monday October 28th  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nRiver of Renewal tells the remarkable story of the Klamath Basin\, a region of the Pacific Northwest spanning the Oregon-California border. Indian reservations are at the headwaters\, along the estuary\, and across the major tributary of the Klamath River. In this place that has witnessed\, since the Gold Rush\, genocide\, war\, and conflicts over resources\, myths of the West loom large\, amplifying differences among inhabitants of a land united by water and divided by people. Yet when faced with ecological catastrophe\, farmers\, tribes\, and other regional stakeholders forged a consensus that led to the largest dam removal and watershed restoration project in history. \nThe only history of the entire Klamath Basin\, River of Renewal tells the stories of the region’s diverse communities and stakeholders\, including the government agencies that manage most of its land. Based on author Stephen Most’s original research and interviews with tribal leaders\, ranchers\, farmers\, fishermen\, forest managers\, and others\, River of Renewal is a political as well as an environmental history\, one that underscores the power of commitment to a place and the vital importance of traditional knowledge in ecological stewardship. It offers an indispensable resource for anyone who wishes to better understand the peoples of the Klamath Basin and their extraordinary accomplishment of bringing about the removal of the four hydroelectric dams that harmed their cultures\, economies\, and environment for a century. \nStephen Most is an acclaimed author\, playwright\, and filmmaker. “River of Renewal\,” a companion documentary that he wrote and coproduced won the American Indian Film Festival’s best documentary feature award.

SUMMARY:Meet John Truby author of The Anatomy of Genres and Leslie Lehr author of A Boob's Life: How America's Obsession Shaped Me...and You
DESCRIPTION:Thursday October 24th  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nGenre stories aren’t just a small subset of the films\, books\, TV shows\, and video games that people consume. The storytelling game is won by mastering genres. They are the all-stars of the entertainment world\, comprising the vast majority of popular stories worldwide. Knowing how to write genres is the most important skill in the storytelling industry—and the real secret of genres is that each one expresses a unique philosophy of how to live a good life\, which is what readers and audiences really hunger for. \nThe Anatomy of Genres is a step-by-step guide to using these basic building blocks of the story world. Legendary writing teacher John Truby details the three ironclad rules of successful genre writing\, and provides in-depth breakdowns of the fourteen major genres—Horror\, Action\, Myth\, Memoir\, Coming-of-Age\, Science Fiction\, Crime\, Comedy\, Western\, Gangster\, Fantasy\, Thriller\, Detective\, and Love—as well as the essential plot events\, or “beats\,” that define each of them. The ability to sequence a genre’s beats in the right way\, and then combine elements from different genres into the densest plot possible\, is what separates stories that sell from those that don’t. \nTruby’s first book\, The Anatomy of Story\, changed the way writers develop stories. The Anatomy of Genres shows writers how to tell their best stories\, and through the power of fiction\, how audiences can live their best lives. \nJohn Truby is the founder and director of Truby’s Writers Studio. Over the past thirty years\, he has taught more than fifty thousand students worldwide\, including novelists\, screenwriters\, and TV writers. Together\, these writers have generated more than fifteen billion dollars at the box office. \nLeslie Lehr is the prize-winning author of A BOOB’S LIFE: HOW AMERICA’S OBSESSION SHAPED YOU… AND ME\, the Women’s National Book Association “Great Group Read” featured in People Magazine\, Glamour\, Good Morning America\, and a bestseller on Amazon. Her three novels include WHAT A MOTHER KNOWS\, her nonfiction has been featured on Oprah\, and she is a produced screenwriter. Leslie’s essays appear in Time\, Newsweek\, Writers Digest\, and the New York Times MODERN LOVE column – read by Katie Couric on NPR. With a BA from USC film school and an MFA from Antioch\, Leslie has taught in the Writers Program at UCLA and at conferences around the country. A breast cancer survivor with two daughters\, she lives in Southern California as close to the beach as possible\, with John Truby and their two cats. \n A Boob’s Life was optioned by Selma Hayek and is in development as a comic series for HBO Max.  Leslie also sold a spec script this year\, a very hard thing to do in the present Hollywood climate.  She coaches writers of fiction and nonfiction in Truby’s techniques.

DESCRIPTION:Monday October 7th  7:00 to 8:00 pm \nGiles Anthony Maurice Gibson\, Manhattanite and president of ABC Toys\, floats through life on a cloud of wealth and privilege. Until now. When his company’s negligence results in tragedy\, the judge\, weary of a world where justice is rarely served\, sentences Giles to a year of community service in rural Oregon\, and supervised work at Sunnyside Up\, a local diner. Renamed “Tony\,” and fitted with an ankle monitor to keep him in his place\, he must find a way to make amends for the consequences of always choosing the easy way. \nShortly after Giles-learning-to-be-Tony arrives\, the curmudgeonly cook finds a dead body in the dumpster behind the restaurant. Tony and the other misfits at the diner are soon suspects\, but—though they will eventually work together to figure out “whodunnit”—Two Over Easy All Day Long isn’t a murder mystery\, it’s a human mystery\, asking how far a person can bend before breaking\, and whether breaking isn’t the point\, after all. \nShari Lane grew up in Ashland (mostly)\, and now lives on Lopez Island\, Washington (a magical island in the Salish Sea). Shari is a graduate of Ashland Senior High\, University of Oregon\, University of Washington\, and Lewis & Clark College\, and her careers have included attorney\, preschool director\, and middle school Latin teacher. Shari’s short stories have appeared in Adelaide Literary Magazine\, Evening Street Review\, Antithesis (forthcoming)\, Cape Magazine\, and others. Whenever possible\, Shari surrounds herself with books\, readers\, and writers. SUMMARY:CHILDREN OF DARKNESS AND LIGHT: Lori Vallow\, Chad Daybell and the Story of a Murderous Faith by Lori Hellis
DESCRIPTION:Thursday October 3rd  7:00 to 8:oo pm \nIn this gripping work of true crime\, a criminal lawyer takes readers inside the notorious Lori Vallow case and the devastating “doomsday murders.” \nA blonde beauty queen\, missing children\, six suspicious deaths\, and the twisted Mormon doomsday writings of her fifth husband are only the beginning of a tragic crime saga that gripped Americans and instigated frantic searches all over the country. \nIt all started when Lori Vallow met Chad Daybell at a doomsday prepper event. Their story grew like a wildfire that creates its own weather\, and what happened next will shock even the most experienced true crime reader. \nClinging to and manipulating one another\, Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell believed the return of Jesus Christ was imminent and that God had chosen them to lead the 144\,000 and usher in the new millennium. When the people closest to them began dying\, it became clear they would stop at nothing to be together and fulfill their mission. When the bodies of Lori’s missing children–J.J. and Tylee–were discovered in Chad’s backyard\, the strange and complex story of their fundamentalist Mormon beliefs were revealed in all their true horror. \nAuthor Lori Hellis\, a retired criminal lawyer\, had just moved to Arizona when news of J.J. and Tylee’s disappearance broke\, and there were reports about these missing children that linked them to a neighboring community. She began to follow the case closely\, trying to understand this perfect storm of people and circumstances that culminated in the death of innocents. In Children of Darkness and Light\, Hellis digs deep into the investigation\, trial\, and verdict to craft a haunting narrative that illuminates one of the most confounding crimes in recent memory. \nLori Hellis practiced criminal and family law in Bend\, Oregon until she retired from practice to devote time to writing. During her legal career\, Lori worked both as a prosecutor and a public defender representing adults and juveniles in criminal matters; she served twenty years in the Air National Guard and has been a passionate advocate for children\, victims of domestic violence\, and veterans.
