Last Days by Brian Evenson

Mr. Kline is depressed. He’s lost his hand in his last case and subsequently lost all motivation to continue detective work. But a cult called the Brotherhood of Mutilation thinks he’s the perfect candidate to investigate the alleged murder of their leader. After being kidnapped, and witnessing first-hand the brutality and fanaticism of the Brotherhood, Kline sees no other alternative than violent revenge and rebuke. Last Days is a testament to Evenson’s acute ability to bend genre to his whim, never sacrificing the tropes of crime and horror but revitalizing them with precision and ease. If you enjoy Raymond Chandler, Samuel Beckett, Clive Barker, Poe and even Twin Peaks, you’ll thoroughly enjoy this.
